SUMMARY:Taking Back Our Economy
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic has sped up unsustainable and unjust trends in our economy. Tens if not hundreds of millions of Americans are struggling to cope with the economic fallout\, while billionaires have only grown more disproportionately wealthy. Communities of color have been hit especially hard. Enormous multinational corporations like Amazon have further deepened their hold on provisioning of both essential and non-essential consumer products\, as local businesses falter or close for good. \nJoin Dedrick Asante-Muhammad\, Chuck Collins\, and Stacy Mitchell on October 15 at 11:00 AM PT for a reality check on these challenges and concrete actions we can all take to build vibrant\, just\, and sustainable local economies even now. \nDedrick Asante-Muhammad is Chief of Race\, Wealth and Community at the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC). He oversees NCRC’s Fair Housing\, Fair Lending and Small Business programs. Dedrick is known for his racial economic inequality analysis particularly as it relates to the racial wealth divide. \nChuck Collins is the Director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies where he co-edits Inequality.org. He is author of the popular book\, Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality\, Bringing Wealth Home\, and Committing to the Common Good (Chelsea Green). His new book\, Is Inequality in America Irreversible? is published by the Oxford\, UK-based Polity Press. \nStacy Mitchell is co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance\, a national research and advocacy organization that fights corporate control and works to build thriving\, equitable communities. \nThis event is free to attend\, but we hope you’ll consider a donation of $25 or more\, which will also give you access to a recording of the event as soon as it’s available. \nCan’t make it to the live event? With a donation of $25 or more\, we’ll send you a link to the recording that you can access at any time immediately following the event. \nFunds raised from the event will support Post Carbon Institute’s efforts to inspire\, educate\, and support many more people to respond with urgency and boldness to the defining challenges of our time. \nTo register: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:8th Grade Science Days
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to present NOAA Boulder’s  2020 Virtual 8th Grade Science Days\, an indepth look at our science. Kids will have the ability to put on their science caps and spend time in the shoes of scientists studying anything from the floor of the ocean to the surface of the sun.  For over 10 years NOAA in Boulder\, Colorado has brought 250 eighth graders to our facility to spend the day with many different scientists\, and learn what they do in their labs\, forecasting offices and research settings.  This year our facilities are closed to visitors\, so we are excited to bring this event virtually to many more students. \nYou will find eight topics\, each with a video and activity.  The videos were all recorded by our scientists in August and September of 2020.  The activities were created to be done with minimal supplies.  They can be completed by students in the classroom or at home\, in a group or individually.  The website will be available all school year. \nHere is the website for our Virtual 8th Grade Science Days program: https://esrl.noaa.gov/outreach/8th-grade-science-days/

SUMMARY:Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students
DESCRIPTION:Fostering the growth of a globally competitive and diverse research workforce and advancing the scientific and innovation skills of the U.S. is a; strategic objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF). U.S. global competitiveness depends critically on the readiness of the Nation’s Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce and NSF seeks to continue to invest in programs that directly advance this workforce. As part of this effort\, a supplemental funding opportunity is available in fiscal years FY 2021 and beyond to provide graduate students with experiential learning opportunities through research internships to acquire core professional competencies and skills to support careers in any sector of the U.S. economy. NSF currently invests in a number of graduate student preparedness activities and has historically encouraged principal investigators (PIs) to include such activities in research proposals to NSF. This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) describes funding opportunities at NSF to ensure graduate students are well prepared for the 21st-century STEM workforce. \nTo learn more information about this grant\, including eligibility\, funding amount and period of support\, please Click Here.
