SUMMARY:Oregon's 2021 Environmental Education Conference
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce our 2021 Environmental Education Conference. We are partnering with Southern Oregon University’s Environmental Education Graduate Program to bring you a hybrid conference with both virtual and in-person sessions. We are aware that social gatherings are not safe at this time and acknowledge that this may still be the case come summer 2021. Keeping that in mind we are working to organize a hybrid conference with the majority of sessions offered online with some in-person field trips and workshops at Southern Oregon University (SOU). We will be prepared to switch to an all-virtual conference if conditions warrant the change.\n\n\n\nProposals for presentations will open December 16\, 2020. Stay tuned for more information!\n\nConference Strands\nConference strands align with Oregon’s Environmental Literacy Plan – system thinking; physical\, human\, and living systems; interconnections of people and the environment; personal and civic responsibility; and thinking and planning for a sustainable future. \nDiversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) will be interwoven into each strand. \n\n\n\nInterested in supporting the conference? Contact us to learn how you can volunteer your time or become a conference sponsor.

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Why participate in the City Nature Challenge?\nThere is nature all around us\, even in our cities! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are helps us study and protect them\, but the ONLY way to do that is by all of us – scientists\, land managers\, and the community – working together to find and document the nature in our area. By participating in the City Nature Challenge\, not only do you learn more about your local nature\, but you can also make your city a better place – for you and other species! \nOur History\nStarted in 2016 for the first-ever Citizen Science Day\, the citizen science teams at Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences dreamed up the City Nature Challenge as a fun way to capitalize on their home cities’ friendly rivalry and hold a citizen science event around urban biodiversity. The first City Nature Challenge was an eight-day competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco\, engaging residents and visitors in documenting nature to better understand urban biodiversity. Over 20\,000 observations were made by more than 1000 people in a one-week period\, cataloging approximately 1600 species in each location\, including new records for both areas. During the 2016 CNC\, we heard so much excitement and interest from people in other cities that we decided we couldn’t keep to the fun just to ourselves. In 2017 the City Nature Challenge went national\, and in 2018\, the CNC became an international event! \nLearn How to Participate Here.

A few steps you can take between now and then to prepare: \n\nDiscuss with your colleagues and Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) teams what you are looking for in a DEI training.\nSeek approval from organization leaders for participation and resource allocation.\n\nIn 2021\, we’ll offer the following three cohorts: \nAWARENESS RAISING  \nFacilitated by DRC Learning Solutions’ Derron Coles\, Lauren Gottfredson and Alexis Millett \n10 organizations \n$700 per Intertwine Alliance partner organization and $1\,400 per non-partner organization \nAll training topics and activities will focus on helping cohort members develop a meaningful and science-based understanding of the fundamentals of diversity\, equity and inclusion\, with an emphasis on antiracist theory and actions. The proposed scope of work includes a 2.5-day training and four 3-hour follow-up meetings as a cohort\, running from March through October 2021. A training schedule will be finalized after getting input from cohort members. \n\nCHANGE AGENT \nFacilitated by DRC Learning Solutions’ Derron Coles\, Lauren Gottfredson and Alexis Millett \n10 organizations \n$800 per Intertwine Alliance partner organization and $1\,600 per non-partner organization \nAll training topics and activities will focus on advancing our language\, skill sets and DEI toolkits so that we can push through personal\, organizational and systemic barriers to achieve more inclusive teams\, organizations and coalitions. \nThe depth to which we cover individual topics will be driven by cohort needs\, but will include: \n\nDeveloping personal vision statements\nApproaches to change agency and coalition building\nMaking the case for integrating DEI considerations into policy and practice\nMindsets that drive change\nReframing issues and working across differences\nSystem analysis and equity auditing\n\nEach organization is invited to designate two participants for the cohort. The proposed scope of work includes a 2.5-day training and four 3-hour follow-up meetings as a cohort\, running from April through November 2021. A training schedule will be finalized after getting input from cohort members. \n\nIMPLEMENTATION PEER GROUP \nFacilitated by Capacity Building Partnerships’ Sara Curiel Paez and Alexis Millett \n8 organizations \n$700 per Intertwine Alliance partner organization and $1\,300 per non-partner organization \nPeer Group will focus on supporting leaders through barriers in integrating DEI into organizational culture\, policies\, practices and programming. SUMMARY:Education for sustainable development and global health: Recognizing the inter-linkage of the health of people and the planet
DESCRIPTION:In preparation of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development on 17-19 May 2021\, in Berlin\, Germany\, in which ESD for 2030 framework will be officially launched\, UNESCO is organizing a series of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) online workshops in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany\, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner. The aim is to explore how ESD contributes to building a world that is more sustainable and equitable\, and how ESD provides the basis for how to recover and rebuild beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. \n\n\n  \n\n\nOur natural environment provides us with the essentials we need to survive and thrive in this world. Access to clean water and air\, healthy nutrition and the absence of natural catastrophes are very obvious examples of how environmental conditions will directly impact not only our life expectancy\, but also our quality of life. However\, there are also more complex interlinkages between the health of people and planet. \nMore people now understand how climate change and extreme weather conditions\, the loss of biodiversity and pollution significantly increase the likelihood of emerging new and zoonotic diseases (diseases that transfer from wild animals onto humans). The change of our environment effects the emergence and the progression of infectious disease as currently Covid-19 or also Ebola. But also non-communicable disease (NCDs) – diseases which develop over time due to certain lifestyles or environmental factors\, mental health\, nutrition\, displacement and general wellbeing – are highly connected to our natural environment. Conversely\, research shows that a strong connection to nature can improve wellbeing and general health. \nESD contributes to human health by promoting knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes on the interlinkages between the environment and human wellbeing\, in particular around issues such as climate change\, zoonosis\, pollution\, sustainable food\, and social and emotional wellbeing. \nIn the light of the above\, this session will address the following questions: \n\nWhat are the interlinkages of between the health of the planet and people?\nHow can ESD contribute to strengthen the awareness that protecting the planet’s health affects humans’ health?\n\nRegister for this event here.

SUMMARY:50by40 Global Engagement Summit
DESCRIPTION:Recent publications\, such as the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land and the EAT-Lancet report highlighted the exigency to reduce our reliance on livestock production and consumption. Thus\, there is an urgent need to facilitate a just transition towards a fair\, healthy and compassionate food system\, delivering nutritious and predominantly plant-based food for all. However\, transforming one of the most deeply embedded systems in this world presents complex and interlinked challenges. \nWith the 50by40 Global Engagement Summit | Voices for a Better Food Future\, we aim to gather voices from across the globe to collectively examine these challenges and\, as a result\, turn them into opportunities to accomplish the change we strive for. \nHosting an accessible virtual gathering provides us with a rare chance to bring together a range of actors working in the food systems to develop a strong and united approach addressing livestock production. With a strong emphasis on mobilising diverse key players\, NGOs\, and communities\, the summit looks into solutions for the planet’s most pressing issues. #FoodEngage20 \n \nFor more information and registration please Click Here.
