SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Why participate in the City Nature Challenge?\nThere is nature all around us\, even in our cities! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are helps us study and protect them\, but the ONLY way to do that is by all of us – scientists\, land managers\, and the community – working together to find and document the nature in our area. By participating in the City Nature Challenge\, not only do you learn more about your local nature\, but you can also make your city a better place – for you and other species! \nOur History\nStarted in 2016 for the first-ever Citizen Science Day\, the citizen science teams at Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences dreamed up the City Nature Challenge as a fun way to capitalize on their home cities’ friendly rivalry and hold a citizen science event around urban biodiversity. The first City Nature Challenge was an eight-day competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco\, engaging residents and visitors in documenting nature to better understand urban biodiversity. Over 20\,000 observations were made by more than 1000 people in a one-week period\, cataloging approximately 1600 species in each location\, including new records for both areas. During the 2016 CNC\, we heard so much excitement and interest from people in other cities that we decided we couldn’t keep to the fun just to ourselves. In 2017 the City Nature Challenge went national\, and in 2018\, the CNC became an international event! \nLearn How to Participate Here.

SUMMARY:Gray Family Foundation Environmental Education Program
DESCRIPTION:2021 Grant Timeline and Links\n\nOnline Application Opens: September 15\, 2020\nApplication due: November 13\, 2020 at midnight\nGrant award notification: By February 26\, 2021\n2021 Gray Family Foundation Environmental Education RFP\nStart your application on MyOCF.\n\n2021 Environmental Education Grant Program Overview\nThe Gray Family Foundation’s Environmental Education program seeks to support programs that stimulate or promote the teaching of environmental education in K-12 environments and increases outdoor experiences for youth. \nThe impact of COVID-19 has had wide-reaching effects on communities across the state of Oregon – and organizations that provide and support environmental education have been significantly impacted. We recognize the current uncertainty and that the various scenarios organizations and educators will face when connecting with youth during the next year are complex. \nThis year\, Gray Family Foundation seeks proposals that stimulate or promote the teaching of environmental education in formal and informal K-12 educational environments to increase outdoor experiences for youth – either during the school day\, as part of distance or virtual learning\, or as a service or opportunity offered to families and youth outside of the context of the school setting. Gray Family Foundation’s Environmental Education Grant Program is focused on projects/programs that benefit 3rd-8th grade youth. Gray FF will fund proposals that best demonstrate alignment with our priorities and reflect our values towards equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI). \nIn 2021\, we are offering three options through our Environmental Education grant program. Gray FF is interested in reviewing proposals for a range of funding levels that best serve the specific needs of your program. During this grant cycle\, we are also especially interested in supporting opportunities for organizations\, schools\, and/or school districts to use and integrate outdoor spaces (e.g. schoolyards\, playgrounds\, nearby parks or natural areas) into student learning as a method for both engaging students and reducing risk for students and educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. \nGray FF will award funds to the strongest eligible projects regardless of project type and encourage organizations to apply for the type of funding that will best serve their efforts. Please note that applicants may apply for projects that include a combination of capacity-building\, field experiences\, and/or professional development\, but may only apply for $25\,000 max. Detailed guidance on the application process will be provided in the RFP. \nFor more information please\, Click Here.

DESCRIPTION:The Youth Design Challenge (YDC) is a free\, hands-on\, project-based learning experience that provides classroom and informal educators with a new framework to introduce biomimicry and an interdisciplinary approach to science and environmental literacy. Working in teams with an adult coach\, students explore the wonders of the natural world and apply what they learn to create innovations that support a healthier planet. Learn more about the YDC and how to participate below. \n  \nTimeline\nThe Youth Design Challenge follows an academic calendar\, with entries reviewed once annually in late spring. \n\nRegistration Opens: November 1\, 2019\nSubmissions Open: December 2019\nCoach Support and Prof. Dev.: November 2019 – February 2020\nRegistration Closes: March 1\, 2020\nSubmission Deadline: April 1\, 2020 (6pm Pacific Time)\nJudging Period: April – May 2020\nAward Announcement: May 2020\n\nWho can participate?\nThe Youth Design Challenge is a team competition for students in middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) in the US. Please refer to the Official Rules for complete eligibility details. \nWhat will your team do?\nYour team will take on the role of innovators and work together to apply biomimicry (nature-inspired innovation) to address a social and/or environmental issue related to climate change adaptation or mitigation. Suggestion: work on an issue that affects your local community! As a coach\, you will guide your students as they study how organisms in nature have adapted to similar problems and challenges and apply what they learn to innovative solutions. Final projects can then be entered into the nationwide competition for prizes awarded by the Biomimicry Institute. \nHow does the Challenge meet instructional goals?\nThe Youth Design Challenge is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for both middle school and high school. Full alignments can be downloaded below. \n\nNGSS Alignment for High School\nNGSS Alignment for Middle School\nNGSS Alignment for UN Sustainable Development Goals (optional focus)\n\nWhat is required to enter the Challenge?\nEntries are submitted online and include the following elements: \n\nWritten project overview \nProject image\nVideo pitch\nProject portfolio\nTeam photo\n\nFor complete details about requirements\, please visit our Submission Guidelines page.  \nJudging and Awards\nAwards are given each year for 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place in two categories: middle school and high school. Award winners are then selected by a panel of expert judges from the top-scoring entries. \nWinning teams will receive an award certificate and have their work publicly recognized online and/or in the media. The school or organization that hosted the team will additionally receive a cash award in the following amounts: 1st Place – $1\,000; 2nd Place – $750; 3rd Place – $500. \n\nCurriculum and Training\nPrior experience with biomimicry is not required to participate in the Challenge. A variety of resources and online training opportunities are provided to help you support your students\, including standards-aligned unit planning resources and a detailed 7-lesson design curriculum module that will guide your team step-by-step through the biomimicry design process.
