SUMMARY:Sitka Art Invitational\, Public Exhibit and Sale
DESCRIPTION:Experience nature-inspired artwork in a variety of mediums and interpretations. Our 25th annual Art Invitational will showcase 350+ works of sculpture\, ceramics\, paintings\, metalwork\, glass\, fiber arts\, book arts and prints\, by more than 130 Northwest artists. The event kicks off with a party with the artists on Friday evening. Sales are shared 50/50 which helps support the Northwest art community as well as Sitka’s programs. \nClick to see participating artists. \nThe theme for 2018 is to emphasize ecology at the Sitka Art Invitational\, artists were invited to collaborate with a scientist. Through our residency and workshop programs we have seen that learning about the natural world\, and particularly the science that helps explain our environment\, can push artistic work in deep and meaningful ways. Our goal for this collaboration is to encourage artists to look at their work and the world through a new lens and then share this perspective with a wider audience. \nParty with the Artists\n6-9pm Friday\, November 2\, 2018 \nJoin the artists who make this colorful gathering an event to remember. Hors d’oeuvres\, wine and hand-crafted beers accompany this lively celebration. \nClick here for details or to purchase tickets.

SUMMARY:How We Come Together: Conversations Inspired by Van Jones
DESCRIPTION:Van Jones’ insight into the contemporary American experience helps us recognize how individuals and institutions have “come apart” from each other\, and inspires pursuit of the many paths to coming back together. Following his Visiting Sage public address on September 12\, we invite you to join us over dessert and drinks to digest the themes Van asserts in Beyond the Messy Truth\, his New York Times Bestseller that offers “a blueprint for transforming collective anxiety and strife into meaningful change.” \nAll are welcome for this intimate evening of conversation and community. We hope to see you at Van’s Portland lecture\, but you don’t need to have attended the talk or read the whole book to have a meaningful discussion about the current divides facing our communities and political institutions. Join the intergenerational group SAGE\, the Coalition of Communities of Color\, and Beneficial State Bank for an evening of cross-cultural conversation\, new connections\, desserts\, and collaborative solutions for coming together. \nMany thanks to The Joinery for welcoming us into their gorgeous showroom for the evening and to certified B Corps Nossa Familia Coffee and Winderlea Vineyard and Winery for the beverages!

SUMMARY:Global Climate Change Week
DESCRIPTION:October 15-21 \nClimate change poses a major threat to sustainable development. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says\, ‘Climate change will create new poor between now and 2100\, in developing and developed countries\, and jeopardize sustainable development’ (2014). \nFor this reason\, it is important for everyone concerned about sustainable development to take action on climate change. One way for academic communities in particular to do so is by taking part in Global Climate Change Week (GCCWeek)\, an initiative designed to encourage academic communities – including academics\, students\, and non-academic staff at universities – in all disciplines and countries to engage with each other\, their communities\, and policy makers on climate change. \nStart planning now.  Learn More Here.

SUMMARY:TEDxMtHood
DESCRIPTION:In the chaos of today’s world\, it can seem like we’re living through an age of constant destruction. Whether it’s depletion of natural resources\, corruption in our governments\, violations in human rights – the problems are real and the consequences are heavy. Nature finds hope in its decomposers. Decomposers break down the dead and the dying. They metabolize what has been destroyed. They turn ruin into hope. Decomposers restore balance. They complete the broken loops. They bring back new life. \nThis year’s TEDxMtHood speaker line-up is confirmed and will bring Portland’s decomposers to the stage.  Their actions are deep. Their ideas are regenerative. They break down the struggle and offer new hope for a better\, healthier world. \nJoin us on October 13th where we celebrate our teachers\, our artists\, our friends\, our neighbors\, our leaders\, our activists\, our scientists\, our system revitalizers\, our life-bringers\, our hope-restorers – our decomposers.

SUMMARY:HEATWAVE: Empathy for the HVAC ….a gamified virtual reality experiment
DESCRIPTION:Join us for HEATWAVE\, an innovative research project conducted by Portland State University’s Research-based Design Initiative\, Bynum Laboratories and Opsis Architecture. \nThe relationship between people and the control systems in a building is a critical factor in overall building energy performance. Thoughtfully designed passive systems are ineffective unless operated as intended\, resulting in a performance gap between predicted energy consumption and actual energy use. Inspired by the need to have better “behaved” occupants\, the team embarked on a research project to study how gamified virtual reality could build upon the user’s emotional relationship with a space\, improving their ability and desire to effectively utilize passive and advanced systems such as shades\, ceiling fans\, lighting controls\, and operable windows. \nThis event features an opportunity to play HEATWAVE\, enjoy refreshments\, and engage in lively discussion about the future of VR in design as we move beyond basic visualization.
