SUMMARY:ESD for 2030 Roadmap Regional Launch
DESCRIPTION:UNESCO is organizing regional online launch events of the ESD for 2030 Roadmap which provides guidance for Member States and other stakeholders for the implementation of the new global framework ‘Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs’ (ESD for 2030): \n\n\nEducation for Sustainable Development (ESD) supports efforts to equip learners with the knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes needed to contribute to a more inclusive\, just\, peaceful and sustainable world. In its Resolution 72/222 in 2017\, the UN General Assembly recognized ESD as ‘an integral element of the SDG on quality education and a key enabler of all the other SDGs’ and reaffirmed UNESCO’s role as the lead agency on ESD. \n\n\n\n\nTo enhance the global efforts on ESD\, the new framework ‘Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs’ (ESD for 2030) was approved by the 40th UNESCO General Conference and acknowledged by the 74th UN General Assembly in its Resolution 74/233. The new framework ESD for 2030 (2020-2030) builds on the Global Action Programme on ESD (2015 – 2019)\, which followed the UN Decade on ESD (2005-2014)\, and focuses on streamlining ESD within the 2030 Agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals within the next ten years. \nUNESCO has developed a Roadmap which provides guidance for Member States and other stakeholders for the implementation of ESD for 2030. With the postponement of the UNESCO World Conference on ESD from June 2020 to May 2021 due to the pandemic\, UNESCO is organizing regional online launch events of the ESD for 2030 roadmap for implementation. \nProgramme (75min)\n• Opening remarks\n• Introduction of the new ESD for 2030 framework and the Roadmap for implementation\n• Panel discussion: ESD for 2030 – ongoing efforts\, key challenges and opportunities in the region\n• Q&A\n• Closing remarks \nLanguages: English/Russian \n*Link to the Roadmap will be sent to all registered participants prior to the event. \nRegister online

SUMMARY:Centering Culture and Healing in Community Development
DESCRIPTION:EcoDistricts is thrilled to be joined by Nella Young and Meghan Venable-Thomas of Enterprise Community Partners\, for our next EcoDistricts Webinar on November 18th at 11 AM PST/2 PM EST. \nHistorically\, the housing sector has evaluated community development impact through the lens of the number of units produced or preserved. However\, research demonstrates that brick and mortar alone do not cultivate thriving\, sustainable communities. Housing and community development without a comprehensive understanding of residents’ collective lived experience and inherent strengths have significant potential for harmful community disruption\, cultural erasure\, and perpetual trauma. By cultivating community development practices centered on resident’s culture\, creativity\, and healing\, practitioners can fortify the inherent cultural knowledge\, tools\, and practices that make residents intrinsically resilient. \nResident participation\, cultural leadership\, and community buy-in are fundamental to successful projects. An inclusive process enables the project to be more reflective of community needs and benefits. Investing in trust-building with the community can also mitigate community objection and create momentum for future development processes. This saves time and resources\, and increases shared ownership over public spaces\, social accountability for upkeep and safety\, and a sense of belonging for residents. \nIn this webinar\, Meghan and Nella will share their lens on cultural resilience and talk about how advancing community cultural equity\, stewarding organizational development with a cultural lens\, and facilitating space and tools for collective healing can be part of how we define and invest in community resilience. \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Dear Ecochallenger\,\n\nOur Ecochallenges have been immensely positive in our collective impact because of you and your team leadership. So we are reaching out to you again to invite you to build yet another strong and committed team for this year’s People’s Ecochallenge.\n\nWe all know what’s taking place around the world right now – to ourselves\, our neighbors\, our communities near and far. In the face of a global pandemic\, unprecedented social justice movements\, massive migrations\, resource depletions\, political and civil unrest\, and overall disruptions to our daily lives (just to name a few)\, we know how significant it is right now to contribute as much good as possible.\n\nSo this October\, join us in aligning your values with the actions you take. Focus on actions that uplift justice for every community\, or focus on actions you can take directly from your home. Challenge yourself to practice deeper sustainability and to engage in critical thinking\, so that we may all live in and share a better world.\n\nFor Team Captains\, we provide the following resources to support your team building:\n\n\n– a 30-page Team Captains Guide\n– social media graphics and print-ready collateral\n– general technical support\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together this October. For now\, let us know if you need anything else to build out your team! We will be in touch again later this month.\n\nSincerely\,\nEcochallenge.org\n\n< create your team now >

SUMMARY:Enjoy a relaxing float down the Sandy River while collecting litter along its banks.
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a relaxing float down the Sandy River while collecting litter along its banks. This event is a one part relaxing float\, one part exciting scavenger hunt! \nAt 10am\, we’ll gather at Dabney State Recreation Area (using physical distancing) for a short introduction & safety talk. Then we’ll launch our rafts\, kayaks\, and other watercraft into the Sandy! Floaters will stop at various beaches along the river to collect litter\, sometimes working as a team\, for example\, to dig something exciting out of the sand. Who knows what you’ll find! Floaters can expect to arrive at Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area (L&C) around 3pm. \nThis year we’re introducing a Land Litter Team\, where you can participate from the comfort of your own two feet! This group will collect litter at a local recreation area. Youth between 10-17 are also very welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. See ticket options below. \nThis Floating Cleanup is the culmination of our 2nd summer of the “Stash the Trash” program\, a DIY cleanup program at 5 lower Sandy parks. These mesh garbage bags make it easy to ‘pack it out’ while you have fun in the water. \n\n\n\nThere are 4 ticket options. You can register as an ‘individual’\, or if you have multiple people in your group\, you can register as a ‘team’. \n\nReserve a paddle in a 4-6 person raft\nReserve a paddle in a 1-person inflatable kayak (limited availability)\nBYOWC (Bring Your Own Water Craft)\, i.e. you’re bringing your own water craft (kayak\, raft\, tube\, boat\, floatie!) paddle\, and personal flotation device (PPD– or life jacket– is mandatory for everyone).\nLand litter team: collect litter at a local recreation area in a more traditional land-based crew.\n\nTo minimize the potential spread of COVID-19\, participants in each raft (borrowed AND BYO) need to be in the same COVID exposure circle (or “household”). Household groups using a raft provided by Stout Creek Outfitters will float with a masked river guide (guide sits at rear as approved by OR State Marine Board Guidelines). If you have less than 4 people in your household\, please reserve a kayak paddle\, or BYOWC! Thank you for cooperating with this new logistical safety detail. \nIf you’re registering for more than one person\, Click the “Tickets” button\, then choose\, “I want to get tickets as a team member” & make up a team name (or join an existing team). In the order form\, you will be prompted to add your guests’ names & ages. \n\n\n\nSuggested donation: $3-50 per person. Your donation gets you a free parking pass at Dabney! Any additional funds donated support this event and the ongoing operations of the Sandy River Watershed Council. \nMoney or credit-card access shouldn’t be a barrier to participating: contact Katelyn at katelyn@sandyriver.org for sliding scale or card-free options or any other questions. \n\n\n\nBig thank you to our funder\, the City of Troutdale\, and to our partners: Oregon State Parks\, SOLVE\, & Stout Creek Outfitters. \nWe look forward to seeing you on the river! \nRegistration Details Here.

SUMMARY:COVID COMPLEXITIES – A GLOBAL TOWN HALL
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has touched every part of the world but its effects and the reaction of different countries has been uneven. In an interconnected world we need to understand the pandemic’s impact beyond our borders. Importantly\, the progress toward a COVID-19 vaccine and therapeutic treatments is a global pursuit. There are\, as well\, already no shortage of changes made and those to come in reaction to the global catastrophe – in our communities\, technology\, health and science\, government performance\, elections\, the global economy and our lifestyles. \nA group of World Affairs Councils – nationwide\, independent\, nonpartisan educational organizations – is joining together with an international network of journalists and specialists to organize conversations over the course of two evenings in early September. The goal is to help Americans understand the impact of the pandemic in an interactive program open to all. \nWe invite you to join this unique partnership to inform and inspire Americans to know more about COVID-19’s impact around the world\, the race for a vaccine and how the vaccine has changed the world. \nOn September 2nd and 3rd journalists\, physicians\, researchers\, NGO officials and others will come together to discuss the global impact of COVID-19 and the pursuit of a vaccine. \nThe program is brought to the public in partnership with many of the nationwide networks of World Affairs Councils and an international network of journalists. \nRegister for this event here.

SUMMARY:We Protest: Fighting For What We Believe In
DESCRIPTION:In her newly published book\, We Protest: Fighting For What We Believe In\, photojournalist Tish Lampert captures the spirit of the heroes and ordinary citizens on their activist journey to defend their American values during the most conflicted era in our recent history. Lampert boldly charts the chronology of social-change movements that have dominated the headlines over the past several years: the fight for women’s rights and gender equality\, immigration rights\, civil liberties\, gun violence\, and the environment. Lampert takes us to the front lines of activism\, where she has documented each protest and their respective leaders\, as well as the legions of ordinary Americans standing together to protect the values of our great nation. \nIn recent months the eyes of the nation and the world have been on Portland as citizens have been demonstrating for over 70 days to protest systemic racism\, police brutality\, and support larger cause of Black Lives Matter. How do we put this moment in perspective and understand Portland’s story in the larger arc of activism? \nJoin us for a rich discussion on protest\, present and past\, with photojournalist Tish Lampert\, Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer\, activist and Executive Director of the Anir Foundation\, and Portland’s Eric K. Ward\, Executive Director of Western States Center. Also featuring a special video introduction from Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist David K. DESCRIPTION:Since the Truman administration\, America has been one “push of a button” away from nuclear war—a decision that rests solely in the hands of the President. Without waiting for approval from Congress or even the Secretary of Defense\, the President can unleash America’s entire nuclear arsenal. \nFor this virtual program\, William J. Perry\, Secretary of Defense in the Clinton administration and Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering in the Carter administration\, and Tom Z. Collina\, the Director of Policy at Ploughshares Fund\, a global security foundation in Washington\, DC\, discuss the terrifying history of nuclear launch authority. \nRead More & Register

SUMMARY:Webcast: Oregon's Forests and the Fight Against Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Forests are among the largest stores of living carbon on the planet\, and it turns out that the forests of western Oregon have a higher carbon density than almost any other forest type in the world. Unfortunately\, the destruction and mismanagement of these forests over the past century has transferred massive amounts of stored carbon to the atmosphere\, which has contributed significantly to the warming of the planet. \nWe can’t change the past\, but the policy choices we make today will either continue to make forests a part of the climate problem\, or ensure that they are part of the solution. \nJoin Felice Kelly\, co-lead of our Forest Defense team\, to learn about Climate\, Carbon\, and Oregon’s Forests\, and what we can do about it. \nDid you know that the State of Oregon owns and manages almost a million acres of public forestland? Oregon’s “State Forests” can play a major role in fighting climate change – both by sequestering large amounts of carbon\, and by mitigating the impacts of climate change – if the state shifts the management of these public lands to respond to the climate crisis. \nJoin us on Wednesday to hear about efforts to protect state-owned old-growth forests and transition the management of our State Forests towards more climate-smart forestry. Two community organizers from different corners of the state will be presenting\, and we’ll have for a Q&A afterwards. Hope you can join! \nREGISTER HERE. \nIMPORTANT: This presentation has a two-part registation process. If you do not complete the second step\, you will not receive information on accessing this presentation.

SUMMARY:ACTION FOR CLIMATE EMPOWERMENT: BUILDING A U.S. NATIONAL PLAN
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a series of dialogues to develop an Action for Climate Empowerment: Building a U.S. National Strategic Planning Framework. \n“Let’s get serious. We need more public engagement. We need more awareness. We need more accountability for those in public life who are making these decisions. … That’s really how simple it really is right now. … So\, my friends\, the component of ACE that is awareness and engagement is key to winning this fight.” \n— John Kerry \nUnder guidance from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Article 6\, nations are encouraged to develop their strategic plans to build public engagement\, education\, and participation in finding and implementing climate solutions. These actions\, referenced in Article 6 are more broadly known  as “Action for Climate Empowerment” (ACE). In the absence of an ACE strategic planning initiative by the U.S. federal government\, members of the nation’s ACE community who have deep experience in climate change  are advancing this important work by building a strategic planning framework to start the process. \nWe invite you to join your peers from across the wide range of ACE-relevant fields for dialogs that will inform the building of the strategic planning framework. The resulting framework\, which you and other experts will have the opportunity to review\, is intended to guide development of an ACE National Strategic Plan in 2021 as part of the United States’ next Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement. The plan will establish priorities for national policy and funding and foster productive collaborations on the regional\, national\, and international levels. When completed\, this process will yield the first ACE Strategic Plan produced by any major emitting country. \nClick HERE to register for this free event!
