Village Building Design Course: A Placemaking Online Intensive

$100 – $225Join us for City Repair’s first Village Building Design Course of the new year. The program will consist of five 3-hour sessions scheduled to work for a wide range of time zones across North America, Hawaii and Japan.

Daily course, 4:00 PM thru 7:00 PM PST
This course is designed to help you deepen existing efforts and initiatives or as your introduction to engaging with initiatives that reclaim the commons, repair our relationship to ourselves, to each other and to the places we inhabit.
Our content condenses over 20 years of experience supporting and facilitating placemaking initiatives in Portland, OR, across North America and around the world into an accessible and newly expanded 15-hour program. The sessions are designed to support you and your community at whatever stage in the process of urban village building you are at in the present moment.
COST: $250, with early bird tickets at $225 if you buy your tickets by December 31, 2020. Please inquire for BIPOC and low-income scholarships. Additional consulting sessions available at a discounted rate for course participants when scheduled by the end of the training.

What are Placemaking, PlaceKeeping and Place Justice?
What are some of the design principles for making places for collective liberation?
The origins of the City Repair Project & the Village Building Convergence and where we are heading after two decades of movement building
Effective tools, techniques and strategies for placemaking especially in the public right-of-way
Building effective coalitions with government, nonprofits, businesses and especially marginalized community groups to catalyze place-based power for collective liberation
Placemaking project management skills including budgeting, volunteer recruitment, team building and day-of volunteer management
Placemaking in the time of COVID-19, global uprisings for Black Lives and Climate Chaos.
CERTIFICATION
Participants who complete the course will earn a 15-hour certificate of training in Urban Placemaking and Village Building Design from the City Repair Project-Portland.
PLATFORMS AND FORMATS
We will use platforms Zoom, Youtube and Google Suite (Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Drawing and Google Slides) to provide you with engaging and interactive sessions.
COURSE CONTENT ARCHIVE
All participants will be provided links to curated videos from these sessions as well as additional content that gives a unique glimpse into key aspects of this work.

We are also offering a course + consultation package that includes a 90-min personalized consultation to support the development and refinement of your community project or initiative.
We believe in holding a strong container for people from different walks of life to converge, share perspectives and learn from each other and so there will be time for facilitated discussions, break out groups and creative design tools to tap into the collective wisdom in the room and to decolonize our pedagogy and uplift voices and initiatives especially of those most impacted by the intersecting violences of colonization, patriarchy and capitalism.
